The Microsoft Azure Security Engineer (AZ-500) certification validates skills in implementing security controls, maintaining security posture, managing identity and access, and protecting data, applications, and networks in cloud and hybrid environments. This associate-level certification is targeted at security professionals who implement Azure security solutions and are responsible for monitoring and responding to threats.
The exam covers four key domains: Manage Identity and Access (25–30%), Secure Networking (20–25%), Secure Compute, Storage, and Databases (20–25%), and Manage Security Operations (25–30%). Core competencies include configuring Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) security, managing conditional access policies, implementing Azure Firewall and Network Security Groups, configuring Azure Key Vault, using Microsoft Defender for Cloud, and integrating with Microsoft Sentinel for SIEM/SOAR operations.
The AZ-500 exam consists of 40–60 questions in 120 minutes with a 700/1000 passing score. It is recommended to have the AZ-900 foundational certification and 1–2 years of Azure security experience. AZ-500 is a prerequisite for the expert-level SC-100 (Cybersecurity Architect) certification.
